Starting late 2017, Occupational Therapists from Rapids Family Health Team (Rapids FHT) and North Lambton Community Health Centre (NLCHC) will be running a collaborative program to address seniors’ falls risk in our community.
The program will focus on educating seniors about the different factors that contribute to falls risk and osteoporosis, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
The program is suitable for individuals: living with or at risk of developing osteoporosis, at risk of falling, are able to ambulate independently 25m with or without a mobility aid, and are physically able to participate in an exercise program with limited supervision.
The program will run 4 weeks in length and each session will include exercise and education on bone health (guest speakers include pharmacist and registered dietician).
The following types of exercises will be addressed in this program:
- Balance (static and dynamic)
- Strength training and weight-bearing exercise
- Postural and spinal exercises
- Proper warm-up techniques/stretching and the importance of cardiovascular weight bearing exercise.
